The following items help the music student be successful:

1) Instrument

You may order an instrument online at:

www.themusicshop.com

Both companies will deliver directly to the school at the beginning of the year and throughout the year.

These items below are included with your rental:

2) Lesson book

a) 4th grade Sounds Innovations Book 1 (Blue) Provided with rental instrument or parent purchase.
b) 5th grade Sounds Innovations Book 1 (Blue)
c) 6th grade Sound Innovations Book 1 (Blue)
d) 7th through 8th grade Sound Innovations Book 2 (Red) Provided by RVS.

The following items are provided by Mrs. Covart:

a) A pencil
b) A folder
c) Band music

The following items are optional and recommended for purchase from the rental company, The Music Shop or NEMC or Amazon.com:

3) Cleaning supplies for your instrument-cleaning kits are available from either rental company.  A pull-through swab for all clarinets, and saxophones.  A clean cloth or T-shirt for the flute cut into a 8" square to be used with the plastic or metal stick included in the case.  All brass instrument mouthpieces will need a good cleaning occasionally and that can be done with a mouthpiece cleaner, it looks like a tiny tree and they can also be washed out with soap and water.

4) Any items you require to play your instrument; reeds for saxophones and clarinets, valve oil for trumpets, trombones or baritones, drumsticks for percussionists.

  • Reeds for beginner clarinet and saxophones-size 2- available on Amazon.com or from The Music Shop on Fanny Road.  Ask or search for RICO REED (instrument) SIZE 2.  Beginner saxophones are Eb (flat) alto saxophones.  Beginner clarinets are Bb (flat) clarinets.
  • Reeds for intermediate students size 2.5 or 3.  Ask or search for VANDOREN (instrument) SIZE 2.5 or 3.  Ricos are also fine and a little less expensive but Van Dorens are high quality and last longer.  Students should practice on 2.5 size before they work up to size 3 strength.

5) A music stand to use at home.  This is the perfect place to put lesson books while practicing.  Putting a book on a table or flat on a bed is not good for posture, the musicians neck, or breathing while playing the instrument.  A book stand on a table works as well as placing the book on a piano or keyboard with the book propped on the stand.  All of these will work well for practicing at home.  Chins UP is the angle we want for ease of breathing, not looking down.
